On a 12-row board the ball makes twelve independent left-or-right decisions. Landing in the far-left slot needs twelve lefts in a row: 1 in 4,096. Landing in the middle can happen 924 different ways, so it happens about 22.5% of the time.
The paytable is built on exactly that. The centre slots — where the ball goes almost always — pay less than your stake back. The edges pay hundreds of times, and you will not reach them. Sum multiplier × probability across every slot and you get the RTP, which the operator sets to whatever it wants the edge to be.
