A European wheel has 37 pockets: 1 to 36 plus a single zero. Red covers 18 of them, so you win 18 times in 37 — 48.65%, not 50%. The payout is 1:1, priced as though you won half the time.
That gap is the house edge: 1 − (18/37 × 2) = 2.70%. Run the same arithmetic on a straight-up number — 1 in 37 paying 35:1 — and you get 1 − (1/37 × 36) = 2.70%. Identical. Every bet on a European wheel is priced off a 36-pocket wheel that does not exist.
An American wheel adds a second zero, 38 pockets, and the same payouts. That takes the edge to 5.26% — nearly double, for one extra pocket. If a casino offers you both, the choice is not close.
Roulette also illustrates why rakeback matters less than game selection. At 2.70% edge with 5% rakeback you recover 0.135% of turnover. Moving to a 1% crypto original saves you 1.7% — more than twelve times as much.
